When Melinda, a classically trained ballerina, is body-shamed by her director after a failed lift— “My swans need bones, not thighs or bouncing bosoms”—she’s devastated but not defeated. Still desperate to dance, she follows a tip from her ballet mistress to seek out Xavier, the legendary owner of Champion Ballroom. But in the flashy, cutthroat world of international Latin dance, Melinda is immediately dismissed by rival females as too uptight, and just a “bunhead who doesn’t know a tendue from a rumba walk.”

When Xavier’s studio is taken over by Jacquelyn and Dmitri, the studio’s star dancer, Melinda, has nowhere to go. She discovers a spark of hope watching the sensuality and power of Latin dance—what Xavier calls “FloorPlay”—and tracks him down at an underground nightclub. Reluctantly, Xavier agrees to train her, seeing past her insecurities to the potential of her classical discipline. With a pole, sass, and unapologetic flair, Xavier begins transforming Melinda from white swan to sex bomb.

As she embraces her body and sensuality, Melinda returns to the Champion Ballroom and finds herself torn between two potential partners—Dmitri, who seduces and controls her in pursuit of a championship title, and Marc, a charismatic dancer with whom she shares a genuine emotional and physical connection. As pressures mount—jealous rivals, sabotaged costumes, and the politics of crooked judges—Melinda must decide how much she is willing to sacrifice to succeed.

With the help of Xavier, Lana (his poised, feminist partner), and her no-nonsense, hilarious roommate Gloria, Melinda learns how to channel her femininity into strength. Dmitri places her in a #METOO situation, and when she resists, he threatens to fire her and Marc if she doesn’t agree to be his backup partner. Melinda finally takes a stand—choosing Marc, authenticity, and her own vision of success.

In the climactic televised solo at nationals, Melinda must face her past humiliation head-on with a lift that once cost her everything. But this time, she soars.

FloorPlay is a vibrant, high-stakes musical that explores #METOO situations, body image, power dynamics, and self-worth through the lens of competitive dance. It’s A Chorus Line in reverse: instead of learning to blend in, Melinda learns to stand out—and in doing so, reclaims her voice, her passion, and her future.

FLOORPLAY is a journey of embracing oneself, discovering one’s strength and following one’s heart.
